International Regulation

Global efforts to regulate private military and security services have grown in recent years. Most notable are the 2008 Swiss-ICRC sponsored Montreux Document and 2010 International Code of Conduct—both can be found under "Global Standards and Codes of Conduct." Additionally, the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva is considering the possibility of elaborating an international convention to govern private military and security services. Each initiative, and also international law generally applicable to private military and security services, is discussed separately below.
